serving oregon and the northwest

HD Courier (formerly High Desert Courier Services) was started in 2010 in Redmond, Oregon as an Independent Contractor with 1 employee.  Today, our  formal name is Heman Northwest, Inc., dba HD Courier.  We have offices in both Bend and Eugene, with 2 employees in Portland, 10 in Eugene, and 28 at our headquarters in Bend.  All drivers are background checked, drug tested, and driving record checked.  Most are TSA certified and all are Medical Courier trained. While our work is primarily medical in nature (pharmaceuticals, lab specimens, surgical instruments, etc.), we offer a wide range of services.  These include, but are not limited to, legal and title documents, auto and aircraft parts, inter-office mail, banking, office products, and electronic parts storage and delivery.  Our vehicle fleet consists of newer autos, cargo vans, and a 26,000 GVW dock high box truck equipped with lift gate (stationed in Bend). We service three airports: Portland PDX, Redmond RDM & Eugene EUG with Alaska Airlines, Delta, and United. There is currently a 5-day per week route from Portland to Central Oregon, with nightly returns to Portland, and a 6-day per week route from Eugene to Portland with nightly returns.

Our clients are based throughout the country, including companies headquartered in New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Dallas, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland and of course, several smaller companies locally in Bend and Eugene.

We are a 24/7/365 business to business courier company.  Our locations provide us with the ability to efficiently service the majority of Western and Central Oregon, both for routed work and on demand or hotshot work.

We have been successful because we are professional, we are on time, and we fix issues as soon as they are identified.  The only product we have to sell is service, and we stake our reputation on it every day.

SAGE Awards – Star Awards for Greatness & Excellence

HD Courier was recently nominated for a 2016 Business of the Year SAGE Award from the Bend, Oregon Chamber of Commerce.  The SAGE Business awards recognize and celebrate businesses, organizations and individuals who have distinguished themselves by fostering growth, innovation, community service and excellence in their sectors.  These awards are administered by the Bend Chamber of Commerce in partnership with US Bank.

Dennis Heman, President and owner of HD Courier, stated they are headquartered in Bend, with office/warehouses in Springfield, Oregon and additional drivers in Portland.  “All of our drivers are TSA approved and have annual Medical Courier training through Integrity Medical Courier Training out of Colorado.   We are the ‘off-campus’ courier company for  the regional hospital system in Central Oregon, handling medical specimens from Dr.’s offices and medical clinics to various labs.  We also handle pathology specimens for a couple of private labs in Bend.  As a result, we understand proper procedures for handling medical specimens, handling spills should they occur, HIPAA regulations, OSHA regulations, etc.   More importantly, we understand the critical nature of taking care of specimens and recognize that our mishandling of any specimens could result in very severe consequences to patients.  Additional medical work includes pharmaceutical deliveries, and pick-up and delivery of transplant parts, cord blood, and whole blood/platelets.  We also move surgical instruments between hospitals around the state and between hospitals and various vendor clients’ facilities in the Portland metro area.”

Heman started High Desert Courier Services in 2010 as a one man shop making pharmaceutical deliveries throughout Central Oregon.  Growth has been exponential, expanding by nearly double every year since.  In 2013, HDCS added regular runs from Central Oregon to the Portland area and in 2014 added the Eugene/Springfield office. Once the company expanded beyond the high desert of Central Oregon and throughout the state it became obvious that a name change was in order due to significant climatic differences .  (Over ½ of the state of Oregon is considered desert, in spite of Western Oregon’s reputation for substantial rainfall.)   “We incorporated as Heman Northwest, Inc and began using HD Courier as our dba.  Today we have 43 terrific employees in 3 cities that handle deliveries statewide.  We are a business to business company as opposed to a consumer to consumer company.”

All drivers are employees.   All employees are background and driving record checked, as well as drug tested.  They observe a business casual dress code, with company-logo shirts and photo ID badges.  There is a no-smoking-on-the-job policy.  “Because we realize that we could possibly represent every business in every building that we enter, we strive to present a very professional appearance and attitude.  We recognize that Service is the only product we have to sell - if we don’t take excellent care of our clients, we simply won’t have any”, Heman said.

The home office is in Bend, with 30 employees (25 of which are drivers).  They have 3,000 square feet of warehouse space in Bend and approximately 3,500 square feet in Springfield.  They store various client products in the supply chain for on-demand deliveries from these locations, enabling HD Courier to readily cover the Oregon coast, the I-5 corridor for the entire length of the state, and all of Central & Eastern Oregon.  Airports served are RDM (Redmond, Oregon), EUG (Eugene, Oregon) and PDX (Portland, Oregon).  Dispatch is available 24/7/365.  There is currently a 5-day per week route from Portland to Central Oregon, with nightly returns to Portland, and a 6-day per week route from Eugene to  Portland and return.
